ECOALIM Database

The ECOALIM database provides life cycle inventories and environmental impacts of raw materials used for animal feed in France

It is based on the life cycle assessment methodology and provides the impact categories climate change, eutrophication, acidification, non-renewable energy consumption, phosphorus consumption and land use at different perimeters: field gate, storage-organization gate, port gate (foreign raw materials only) and factory gate. Technical data from 2008-2012 were used. At the time of its creation, the database contained more than 150 values, including 58 average raw materials, 27 raw material sub-products and 10 foreign raw materials. It is regularly updated and enriched with new raw materials.

The ECOALIM database exists in two formats: in Microsoft Excel, for insertion into feed-formulation matrices to calculate impacts of a feed or to optimize the impacts through eco-formulation, and in SimaPro ®, for use by life-cycle assessment specialists. ECOALIM is integrated into the national database Agribalyse ® as its animal-nutrition component. ECOALIM is also the database of French raw materials used in the Label “Bas Carbone” methods for pigs and ruminants.
